PeakTrader:

It’s not that economists who favor raising the minimum wage (many of them top economists, including Nobel Prize winners) don’t understand supply & demand, it’s that many economists who are against the minimum wage live in a vacuum and are void of the knowledge how the other 99.9% of economic forces interrelate and interact.

****

And, of course, there are people like Marque2, who start with a biased position and then chooses pieces of biased information, while ignoring other relevant factors, to support his biased position.

In the scientific methodology of NeoClassical Economics, all the positive and negative explanatory variables, within countries and between countries, are included.

****

Seattle Sam says: “Can you imagine how chaotic things would be if we let the employers and employees determine that number?”

Yes, median income may fall, low-wage labor force participation rates may crash, welfare may rocket, and people like Obama, Pelosi, and Reid may run the country.

****

I’m sure, there were many Americans in the 1970s who opposed raising environmental standards.

And, many would’ve accepted even more smog, polluted lakes, erosion, trash, etc. than the 1970s.

Of course, environmental standards can go too far, like labor standards can go too far, e.g. raising the minimum wage to $25 an hour.

And, some people believe “market failures” are impossible.

****

Raising the minimum wage to achieve a “fair wage” is a bad idea. Raising the minimum wage to correct a market failure and move the economy towards optimization is a good idea.

I wouldn’t want to read your resume:

2007 – 2010: Was Morganovich’s personal sidekick…nom…nom…nom…he kicked…nom…nom…nom…and I kicked…nom…nom…nom…my side…nom…nom…nom…his side.

I went to the Jon Murphy school of Economics…nom…nom…nom.

Ken deserves a lot of credit for being in Morganovich’s wacko group.

And, “everyone else” isn’t Morganovich’s minions.

Most U.S. libertarians do not identify with Tea Party: survey
Oct 29, 2013

“Most American libertarians do not consider themselves part of the conservative Tea Party movement despite a public perception that the two political groups are linked.

Libertarians, who generally support maximizing individual rights and minimizing the role of government, differ sharply with the Tea Party and religious conservatives.

65 percent of libertarians were opposed to increasing the minimum wage, while 57 percent of Republicans overall supported it, the survey found.

More than 70 percent of libertarians favored legalizing marijuana, while about 60 percent of Republicans and Tea Party members opposed such a move, the survey found.

Ninety-six percent of libertarians oppose President Barack Obama’s landmark healthcare restructuring compared to 89 percent of Republicans.

Libertarians..most are under 50, more than two-thirds are men and nearly all are non-Hispanic whites.”

****

A liberal will yell at someone high on marijuana to get out of the road before getting run over, while a libertarian will say nothing and if he gets run over, that’s a personal choice.

PeakTrader:

I think, the basic problem is most U.S. schools don’t spend enough time teaching math.

I don’t see anything wrong with teaching math from every angle, e.g. equally.

I think, every kid should have a scientific calculator too and taught how to use every key (you know kids would go for that, particularly nowadays).

You can do 231 / 7 in your head, i.e. (estimating) 7 X 30 = 210 with 21 left over divided by 7 = 3. So, 30 + 3 = 33.

Also, I may add, I used my fingers, i.e. 210, 20, 30 – two fingers Smile

****

You actually estimate by doing 7 X 10 = 70, and then 70 X 3 = 210 (10 X 3 = 30), with 21 left over.

And, then 21 / 7 happens to be 3.

I went directly to 7 X 30 = 210. However, there are several ways.
